Following reports of a rise in young people choosing careers in farming, two Brooksby College students shared their thoughts on the future of careers in agriculture during a fascinating interview on BBC Radio Leicester.

With a rise in popularity for Agricultural courses following the launch of reality TV series Clarkson’s Farm, first year Level 2 Agriculture students, Oscar Stewart and Raya Dixon spoke to host Ben Jackson about the growing interest in farming careers for young people, their own aims for the future, and how Brooksby College is helping them get there.

Reflecting on the impact of TV and social media representation of life on a farm, Raya shared: “It’s given people a more in-depth look at what the world of farming is like, and I think that’s great. Shows like that can really teach people a lot.”

Speaking on the programme, Oscar shared his own enthusiasm for the industry, stating: “I’m not from a farming background, but grew up near a dairy farm, which inspired my love for agriculture. The community is very strong, and the farming industry needs young people who are passionate, and that’s what has inspired me to continue on my path.”

When asked what advice she’d give to other young people who want to know more about farming, Raya said education at a specialist college like Brooksby can be the key to developing skills. She said: “I didn’t know much about farming, or driving tractors, but now I’m at College and have learnt so much. We all have different strengths and specialisms, so we all help each other grow and learn. The Young Farmers community is so supportive!”

Looking ahead at the development of farming, Ben said he feels confident in the future of the industry with students like Oscar and Raya. He said: “If there are young farmers like you both, the future of farming is in good hands for generations to come.”

Agriculture and Land-based courses at Brooksby College continue to strengthen as the campus recently opened a £18m development, including a state-of-the-art Agri-Tech Centre – featuring advanced precision farming technology, tractor and machinery teaching yard, and purpose-built labs, drones, and robotics.
